Privacy Policy

A custody agreement for a pet still asks for personal details: who you are, where you live and how you share your days. This page explains what Pet Custody collects, why, who sees it, and how you stay in control.
1The short version
- To write your agreement we need details about you, the other owner, your pet and your home, plus a photo of your ID and a selfie. We ask for only what the service needs.
- We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.
- Your ID photo and selfie are checked by Stripe and kept in private storage. A selfie is also printed on the Identity page of your signed agreement.
- Your answers are sent to an AI service so it can write your draft. We do not allow them to be used to train AI models.
- You can ask to see, fix or delete your information at any time by emailing hello@petcustody.com.
2Who is responsible
Spring Chicken runs Pet Custody at petcustody.com and is responsible for your personal information. For any privacy question or request, email hello@petcustody.com. That inbox is read by the person in charge of protecting personal information at Pet Custody.
3What we collect
- Account details: your name, email address and sign in details, and your phone number if you confirm codes by text.
- Your answers and your agreement: your legal name, the other owner's name and email, the name, species, breed, age and photos of your pet, microchip and vet details if you add them, where each of you lives or plans to live, who cares for the animal and when, how costs are shared, and the wishes you want the agreement to reflect, together with your drafts, summaries and approvals.
- Identity checks: a photo of your government ID, a live selfie, the details read from the ID (such as name, document type and issuing country), and the result of the check.
- Payment details: whether you paid, how much, the price and the receipt. Your card number goes to Stripe and never reaches us.
- Signing records: when and how each person confirmed identity, approved and signed, with the IP address and technical details of each step.
- Messages: emails we send you, codes we send by email or text, notes you add to an invitation, and anything you write to us.
- Use of the site: which pages signed in users visit, your IP address, browser and device type, and your cookie choice.
- The other owner's details: the name and email address you give us for the other owner, so that we can invite them.
4How we use it
- to set up your account and run your agreement from first question to signature
- to confirm who each person is, and to prevent fraud and misuse
- to take payment and send receipts
- to draft your agreement and its plain English summary
- to collect electronic signatures and keep a record that lets the agreement be verified later
- to email you about your agreement, including reminders if you leave something unfinished
- to keep Pet Custody secure, fix problems and improve it
- to meet our legal duties and to answer legal claims
We use the sensitive details you give us, such as your ID and your home address, only to provide the service you asked for.
5AI drafting
To write your draft and summary, we send the merged answers from both owners to OpenAI through its API. That includes names, where you live and the details about your pet and its care that you entered. We do not allow this content to be used to train AI models.
Drafts are written by AI and are not a person's judgment. See the Terms of Service for what that means for you.
7ID photos, selfies and face matching
When you confirm your identity, Stripe compares the live selfie to the photo on your ID. That comparison uses facial geometry, which some laws treat as biometric information. We ask for your explicit agreement before the check starts, and you can decline, although you will not be able to sign without confirming who you are.
Pet Custody keeps a private copy of your ID photo and selfie with your agreement, behind short lived access links. We use them only for your agreement. We never sell, rent or trade them, and we do not use them to identify you anywhere else.
Your selfie is printed on the Identity page of your signed agreement, so that each signature can be tied to a person. That printed copy is part of the signed record.
We keep the private copies until we no longer need them for the purpose they were collected for, or until you ask us to delete them, and in any case no longer than 3 years after your last interaction with us. The printed selfie in a signed agreement stays with that agreement.
8How long we keep it
- Your account and agreement records stay while your account is open.
- A signed agreement, its audit trail and its verification record are kept for as long as the agreement may reasonably be needed, which can be many years.
- Payment records are kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
- If you ask us to delete your account, we delete what we can and tell you what we must keep and why.
9Checking a signed agreement
Every signed agreement has an agreement number. Anyone who has that number and the last name of one of the owners can use the Check a signed agreement page to ask for a copy. The page never shows the agreement. We email both owners, with the name and email address of the person asking and any note they wrote. Only if both owners say yes do we email the person asking a secure link to the signed PDF, which works for 7 days and for a limited number of downloads. If either owner says no, or nobody answers within 7 days, nothing is shared. The page gives the same reply whether or not an agreement exists, so it cannot be used to find out which agreements exist, and we limit how often it can be used.
11Your rights and choices
Whatever country you live in, you can ask us to show you your information, correct it, delete it, give you a copy, or stop using it for a purpose. Email hello@petcustody.com. We may need to confirm it is you, and we reply within 30 days. If we turn down a request, we will say why, and you can reply to ask us to look again.
United States. If you live in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas or another state with a privacy law, you have the rights above, plus the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising. We do none of those things. In the past 12 months we have collected identifiers, home address and household information you gave us, government ID and biometric information, payment records, and internet activity, and we disclosed them only to the service providers listed above for the purposes described. We do not treat you differently for using your rights.
Canada. Under Canadian privacy laws, including PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25, you can ask for access and correction, and withdraw your consent. Your information is processed by providers in the United States and other places, outside your province or Quebec. You may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Quebec, to the Commission d'accès à l'information.
European Economic Area and United Kingdom. Where those laws apply, we rely on your contract with us to provide the service, on our legitimate interests in security and fraud prevention, on your consent for the face match and optional cookies, and on legal duties where they apply. You may complain to your local data protection authority.
12Where your information goes
Pet Custody is run from Canada, and our providers work in the United States and other countries. Your information can be processed in those places, where privacy laws may differ from your own. We choose providers that protect information, and we share only what each one needs.
13Security
Connections to Pet Custody are encrypted. ID photos and selfies are kept in private storage and opened only through short lived links, important actions on an agreement are logged, and the people who can reach your information are limited. No system is perfectly secure. If something happens that puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
14Children
Pet Custody is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.
15Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The date at the top shows the latest version, and we will tell you about significant changes by email or on the site.
